The International Contest FLOODPLAIN INNOVATORS
We are delighted to invite your school students (age 6 to 19) to participate in the Wetland Functions Modelling Contest: FLOODPLAIN INNOVATORS, an exciting international competition organised as part of the Restore4Life project. This contest provides an excellent opportunity for students to explore the critical role of wetlands in environmental conservation while demonstrating their creativity and innovation.
About the contest
Wetlands play a vital role in sustaining human well-being by delivering a wide range of ecosystem services. They act as natural providers of essential resources—supplying food, fresh water, and raw materials—while also performing critical regulating functions such as reducing flood and drought risks, filtering pollutants, and maintaining water quality. Beyond their physical benefits, wetlands hold significant cultural value, supporting recreation, spiritual practices, and local heritage.
The primary objective of this contest is to deepen students’ understanding of wetland functions by designing and building models, boardgames, movies, and picture books that demonstrate key ecological roles.

How it works
Students will explore the fascinating world of wetlands and research their essential functions, developing creative and hands-on activities that demonstrate these functions. Each team, depending on age will need to:
Research wetlands and their functions
Desing and create a wetland book (primary school students, up to 10-11 years of age)
Design and create a wetland functions boardgame or create a short movie to demonstrate the wetland functions (secondary school students, up to 14-15 years of age)
Create a functional wetland model (physical or computer model) to demonstrate one of the wetland functions (high school students, up to 18-19 years of age)
How to participate
The contest is open to teams of students (age 6 to 19) from the countries participating in the Restore4Life project: Austria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Montenegro, Romania, Serbia, Slovenia, Slovakia, Spain, Armenia, Belgium, Portugal, Sweden, Ukraine).
Each country may enter a maximum of 3 teams.
