Executive summary
Wetlands are critical for climate regulation through carbon sequestration, but assessing this function is heavily challenged by complex processes and poorly comparable methodologies. To address this gap, this Restore4Life deliverable provides a structured manual that compiles and evaluates various field-based and geospatial monitoring approaches. Using standardized factsheets, the manual details the applicability, indicators, data requirements, and limitations of each method. These approaches are cross-examined through a transparent evaluation framework based on measurement characteristics, such as accuracy, cost, expertise, and required time, as well as spatial and temporal resolutions. Crucially, the document highlights that individual methods only capture specific components of the carbon cycle, offering partial estimates rather than complete balances.
