Episode 3: Wetlands and Climate Change Mitigation
Don’t miss the newest episode of the Restore4Life podcast, airing on October 13th, where we dive into the important question: What is the true climate regulation role of wetlands? Are these ecosystems sources of greenhouse gases, or can they be harnessed as powerful carbon sinks?
We’re thrilled to welcome a leading expert in river ecology and conservation, Dr. Szilvia Ádám, to share her work and outlook on the matter.
Since 2019, Dr. Ádám has been a key figure at WWF Central and Eastern Europe (WWF-CEE), serving as the Regional Freshwater Program Officer based in Budapest. Her impressive background includes a PhD in nature conservation, ecology, and landscape historical studies focusing on the floodplain forests of the Danube Islands, and she brings expertise in river ecology and GIS, plus a passion for old maps!
In her role at WWF-CEE, Dr. Ádám has coordinated unique research and helped implement vital restoration initiatives. Most notably, she led a pilot study on the climate impacts of floodplain restoration along Hungary’s Tisza River. This landmark project demonstrated that reviving floodplain ecosystems can transform vast landscapes from greenhouse gas emitters into carbon sinks, effectively linking biodiversity recovery with global climate change mitigation.
