Restore4Life Ignites Wetland Education with the “Living Floodplains” Digital Toolbox

We are thrilled to announce a major leap forward in connecting science, education, and community action: the launch of the “Living Floodplains: Learn, Explore, Restore4Life Digital Toolbox!”

This flagship innovation from the Restore4Life project marks a pivotal moment in our mission to champion Europe’s wetland restoration and conservation efforts. Designed as a dynamic, open-access learning environment, the Digital Toolbox invites educators, students, and citizens alike to dive into the captivating world of wetlands.

We’re transforming complex ecological concepts into materials that are not only scientifically accurate but also deeply accessible and inspiring, fostering understanding, curiosity, and collective action across the continent.

A Gateway to Learning, Creativity, and Restoration

The Living Floodplains Toolbox is an interactive hub built to enrich the educational experience. It blends engaging design with scientific and educational accuracy, featuring:

  • Gamified Illustration: An immediate and engaging entry point! Users are greeted by interactive, gamified visuals for each topic, making the curriculum instantly exciting.
  • 5E Teaching Materials ((Engage–Explore–Explain–Elaborate–Evaluate): Educators can easily download the comprehensive Restore4Life 5E Teaching Materials (protocols and worksheets), complete with direct links to Zenodo for reliable, long-term resource availability.
  • Curated Repository: The Dashboard offers access to the Wetland Education Repository, a carefully curated collection of related educational activities and best practices gathered from across Europe.
  • Complementary Tools: Links to other integral Restore4Life tools, such as the Blue-Green Space4All online game, the Wetland4Life citizen science app and the Wetland Fresk game, ensure a holistic and varied learning journey.

The Wetlands Fresk is a collaborative, interactive workshop designed to help participants explore how human activities impact wetland ecosystems (including tidal flats, salt marshes, lagoons, etc.), the consequences of those impacts, and the potential solutions. Participants work together to build a “map” of cause–effect relationships using a set of cards, and then move toward reflection and action.

Wetland4Life helps to make wetland mapping accessible to everyone. It offers simple, practical ways to assess wetland condition and identify restoration opportunities.

  • Step-by-step simple questions guide you through the mapping process. Each location takes approximately 5 minutes to assess — quick, clear, and scientifically grounded.
  • The app include a built-in academy with material about wetlands — like their functions, threats, and restoration. Whether you’re a beginner or a professional, there’s always something new to discover.
